What is the Mevlana Exchange Program in Türkiye and When Was It Discontinued?
The Mevlana Exchange Program was an initiative designed to promote the exchange of students and academic staff between universities in Turkey and higher education institutions around the world. Launched by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in 2011, the program aimed to support the internationalization of Turkish universities and enhance academic collaborations globally.
Objectives of the Program:
-
To develop academic cooperation between universities in Turkey and those abroad.
-
To enable students and academic staff to gain international experience and exposure to different cultures.
-
To improve the quality of higher education and promote global knowledge sharing.
How the Program Functioned:
-
The Mevlana Exchange Program facilitated the exchange of students and academic staff for one or two semesters, allowing them to study or teach abroad.
-
The program provided participants with a certain level of financial support through scholarships.
-
Courses and academic work completed during the exchange were recognized and credited by the participant's home university in Turkey.
Discontinuation of the Program:
The Mevlana Exchange Program was officially discontinued in 2022. The reasons for its discontinuation included the need for more efficient use of resources and a restructuring of Turkey's internationalization strategy in higher education. The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) indicated that Turkish universities would continue to foster international cooperation and mobility through other means and bilateral agreements.
In place of the Mevlana Exchange Program, universities in Turkey are continuing to promote student and academic staff mobility through their own bilateral agreements and other international exchange programs.
