In the interview, the concept of “Onarımcılar”, which has an important place in the world of thought of the University of Cappadocia, the founder of Cappadocia University, was discussed, the emergence of this thought and its journey from a literary fiction to real life. Serhatlı, who has known Alev Alatlı closely for many years and witnessed his world of thought personally, described the process that extends from the intersection of his paths with Alatlı to the formation of the Onarımcılar movement.

Serhatlı, who made evaluations on the idea of Onarımcılar, which Alev Alatlı put forward in his novels “The Nightmare” and “Dream”, stated that repair begins primarily from the individual himself. He pointed out that this approach, in addition to improving the human being himself, also involves rethinking about memory, language, morality and social relations.

Serhatlı stated that in the early 2000s, the communication environment between Alev Alatlı's young readers turned into a strong forum for thought and discussion over time. He later reported that participants from different fields, from academics to students, journalists to writers, shared their opinions and learned from each other in the e-mail group, which was called “Turnalar” which included about 1,500 people.

Serhatlı said that the idea of Onarımlar, which Alev Alatlı developed in his novels, moved to real life over time, and stated that a core staff of about 15 people came together and carried out work around this idea. He explained that meetings with young people were held in universities; various studies were carried out on aphasia, language, thought, chaos, quantum physics and ancient values.

One of the important topics of the program was the relationship between language and thought. Serhatlı stated that questioning the given knowledge, being able to look at events from different angles and in a holistic way, preserving the meaning that concepts carry are among the main elements of Restorative thinking. Attention has been drawn to the importance of establishing a strong connection with the past, memory and cultural accumulation so that the individual can form their own world of thought.

“5A”, which has an important place in Alev Alatlı's world of thought and is among the values of the University of Cappadocia; was also evaluated on the concepts of reason, morality, justice, adap and love. Serhatlı stated that reason is necessary but not sufficient on its own; that a sense of thought and life that, together with morality, justice, adoration, and love, forms the basis of the Onarımcı spirit.

Referring to the strong relationship that our founder Alev Alatlı established with young people, Serhatlı said that he made a lasting impression not only with his works, but also with the way of thinking, self-confidence and responsibility that he brought to the young people he came into contact with directly. He explained that Alatlı encourages young people to read, to research, to understand different thoughts and to become aware of the accumulation of civilization they have.

Serhatlı stated that he closely witnessed the founding process of the University of Cappadocia and stated that our Founder Alev Alatlı evaluated the needs, cultural accumulation and goals of the region together in his educational approach. Serhatlı explained that this approach has an important role in shaping the founding vision of the University of Cappadocia.

Serhatlı stated that the idea of Onarımcılar has been revisited with the students of the University of Cappadocia today, and said that different activities are planned, such as reading studies and debates with young people. With these studies, the aim is for students to express their thoughts based on the basis, to be able to understand different opinions and to be able to generate ideas by maintaining the manners of discussion.

Serhatlı stated that the journey of Onarımcılar, which began almost 25 years ago, continues with new generations, and pointed out the importance of transferring Alev Alatlı's thought heritage to young people.

The program was completed with evaluations aimed at preserving the thought heritage of our Founder Alev Alatlı, transferring the spirit of the Onarımcılar to new generations and rethinking the relationship that man establishes with himself, his language, his memory and his values.
