Speech and language therapists are healthcare professionals who work in the identification, prevention, and rehabilitation of communication, language, speech, voice, and swallowing disorders. Therapists are responsible for planning and implementing therapy and rehabilitation programs for patients referred by specialist physicians. Speech and language therapy is an autonomous profession that requires interdisciplinary interaction, with duties, authorities, and responsibilities defined by the Ministry of Health regulations. Therapists work with patients across all stages of life, from early childhood to old age.
The Speech and Language Therapy Department at Cappadocia University trains qualified healthcare professionals who possess both the fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical skills required by the field, as well as strong reasoning and problem-solving abilities. A dedicated Speech and Language Therapy Laboratory has been designed for conducting applied courses. The laboratory includes six therapy and observation rooms, a speech-language/basic education laboratory, and a speech disorders laboratory (covering acoustic, aerodynamic, resonance, and swallowing tests). During their education, students also benefit from the Anatomy and Dissection Laboratory and the Audiometry Laboratory.
Speech and language therapists can work in public, private, or university hospitals, as well as in special education and rehabilitation centers that provide services to individuals with speech and language disorders. They may establish their own private practices or work in centers created in collaboration with relevant specialists. Graduates who wish to pursue an academic career may continue with postgraduate education at universities in Turkey or abroad and advance academically.
Speech and Language Therapy students can enrich their expertise in speech-language disorders by combining it with other health and behavioral sciences disciplines through double major (ÇAP) and minor programs, broadening their career prospects.
