Midwifery, one of the oldest known professions, is today recognized among modern professions through undergraduate and postgraduate education. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines midwifery as a certified professional who provides necessary care and counseling during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, conducts normal deliveries independently, and provides newborn care. Midwives undertake important responsibilities not only for women but also for families and society. The success of maternal and child health and primary health care services highlights the crucial role of midwives in achieving the “Health for All in the 21st Century” objectives, particularly the goal of “Ensuring a Healthy Start in Life,” as well as in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates within the Millennium Development Goals framework.
Our Midwifery Department aims to educate professional midwives who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide services in every field, embrace ethical values and lifelong learning, possess social responsibility awareness, have developed problem-solving abilities, and hold strong research knowledge and skills.
In order to conduct practical courses in the Midwifery Department, a practice laboratory specifically designed for the department has been established. These laboratories include classrooms that simulate a hospital environment, providing students with the opportunity to gain realistic experience. In addition to the professional knowledge and skills acquired through standard undergraduate education in the School of Health Sciences Midwifery Department, students are also offered courses that support their personal development. Furthermore, through the Erasmus program, students are given the chance to study at universities in different countries abroad.
Midwifery graduates are mostly employed in institutions affiliated with public hospitals (training and research hospitals, state hospitals, community health centers, and family health centers). In addition to public hospitals, they may also work in private hospitals and specialized clinics. Midwives may also work independently as freelance midwives and, by pursuing postgraduate education, they can become academics at higher education institutions.
Midwifery Department students can benefit from double major (ÇAP) and minor programs, enriching their expertise in maternal and infant health with complementary disciplines in health sciences and thereby broadening their career prospects.
Nutrition and Dietetics
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
Students admitted to the double major program have the right to earn two separate diplomas by completing their second undergraduate program simultaneously with their main field of Midwifery. In this way, they combine their expertise in prenatal and postnatal care with specialized knowledge in their second field, gaining strong advantages in both clinical and public health sectors.

Minor programs allow you to continue focusing on your main field of Midwifery while gaining basic knowledge and skills in a second discipline. Upon successful completion, you graduate with a minor certificate.
These double major and minor opportunities contribute to students’ holistic maternity care approaches, multidisciplinary teamwork, and patient-family communication skills, helping them stand out in the dynamic healthcare sector. The curriculum is structured in accordance with the “National Core Midwifery Curriculum” and designed to provide knowledge and skills relevant to the profession. In addition to basic medical sciences courses that form the foundation, the curriculum includes courses covering fields of practice in midwifery such as Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neonatology and Child Health, Public Health Nursing, Internal and Surgical Diseases, Mental Health, and Reproductive Health. It also offers courses aimed at developing students’ research skills such as Research Methods and Techniques and Biostatistics. Clinical practice courses are included to provide students with hands-on skills during the semester. At the end of the 3rd year, students complete a summer internship to gain professional experience. The 4th-year curriculum is practice-oriented, offering students opportunities for training in maternity clinics, Family Health Centers, and Community Health Centers. Before graduation, midwifery students are required to gain experience by monitoring at least 100 normal pregnancies, 40 high-risk pregnancies, 100 normal puerperae, 100 normal and 50 high-risk newborns, conducting 40 normal deliveries, and assisting in or observing 1–2 breech deliveries.
In addition to global awareness courses that support students’ personal development, the curriculum also provides foreign language education.
Midwifery is a profession that requires dedication and patience. Candidates who wish to choose this profession should be devoted, patient, strong in communication, empathetic, able to cope with emotional situations, capable of making quick decisions, and open to change and innovation.
