An international and interdisciplinary project on the future of humanity and our world is being implemented at Cappadocia University entitled "Imagining a Common Horizon For Humanity and The Planet".

Joining us for the first program entitled "Decolonizing Arab History" in the project, which will be broadcast live on the Cappadocia University YouTube channel on Thursday, October 28, at 19:30, will be world-famous thinker Professor Ussama Makdisi, who is a lecturer in the Department of History of Rice University. 

The program will be moderated by Professor Cemil Aydın, who lectures in the History Department of the University of North Carolina, and the subject of the discussion with Prof. Makdisi will be “Predictions regarding the future of humanity and our world, and what needs to be done for a better future.”
 

Prof. Ussama Makdisi

Professor Ussama Makdisi is a lecturer in the Department of History of Rice University, and is the president of the Arab-American Educational Foundation at the same university. He completed his undergraduate studies at Wesleyan University in 1990 and his Ph.D. at Princeton University in 1997, and is currently engaged in studies on Modern Arab history, US-Arab States relations, Ottoman history, Missionary history and Sectarianism. His books "Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World" (2019), "Faith Misplaced: The Broken Promise of US-Arab Relations, 1820–2001" (2010), "Artillery of Heaven: American Missionaries and the Failed Conversion of the Middle East" (2008) and "The Culture of Sectarianism: Community, History, and Violence in Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Lebanon" (2000), as well as "Memory and Violence in the Middle East and North Africa" (2006), to which he contributed as an editor, have been translated into many languages around the world. Professor Makdisi has published in many academic journals and has received several international awards.

Prof. Cemil Aydın

Professor Aydın is currently working as a lecturer in the History Department of the University of North Carolina. Having completed his undergraduate education at Boğaziçi University in 1991 his Master's degree at Istanbul University in 1995 and his doctorate at Harvard University in 2002, Prof. Aydın is today focusing his efforts on Modern Middle Eastern History and Modern Asian History, with special emphasis on the international and intellectual history of the Ottoman and Japanese Empires.
